On 20–21 December 2016, various NGOs which are implementing the projects in Myanmar Dry Zone area participated in Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on ‘Scaling-up Interventions for Sustainable Agricultural Development in Myanmar’s Dry Zone’ in Nay Pyi Taw. This dialogue is organized by CAPSA, the Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology, Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization and Network Activities Group under a project funded by the Livelihoods and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT) and implemented in partnership with the Department of Rural Development of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation of Myanmar.
Lessons learned as well as a wrap up of first day discussion were presented by Khin Win Kyi from Action Aid Myanmar. She shared how each stakeholder is interrelated in the process of scaling up of sustainable agriculture practices and its development in Dry Zone, Myanmar. From the bottom – farmer level that requires technical, financial and policy assistance as well as three corners which involves Government, INGOS and NGOS, and private sectors. Each stakeholder has its own roles and processes that involves various fields of interventions including participatory need assessment, planning, awareness, piloting research and extension services, innovation ideas, financing options mechanism, etc. (Figure 1)

Mr. Luca Nichetti, Yangon Office Coordinator, Terre des Hommes Italia based in Myanmar, shared the lesson from the implemented projects in Dry Zone Myanmar on Hydroponic and Drip Irrigation in Magway and Mandalay region. It has two outputs; (1) Improve nutrition with saving-water small scale farming from simplified imhydroponic greenhouses and on-soil system, (2) Decrease water scarcity through pond renovations and deep tube-well excavations. He emphasized that in order to scale up successful interventions in the Dry Zone; there are important factors to be considered; the importance of coordination with other actors in the territory, especially with authorities, the ability of changing strategy and approach throughout time frame of the project, starting from beneficiaries needs, the development of capacities without impositions, and the key roles of functioning demonstration plots, ownership, technical assistance, monitoring and exit strategy.
